How to reframe self judgement
A window into a more vulnerable conversation with yourself
When was the last time something said left an emotional sting? Perhaps it was your inner talk doing the work.
We might not always show that this stuff impacts us but when it does, it feels rotten.
After a night out celebrating the launch of Spell Work, I woke up feeling a heavy physical wave, followed by a judgmental voice: criticising, blaming, foreseeing a shitty future:
“Who do you think you are? You’re so unproductive and lazy. All that money invested is going down the toilet. You’re going to fail.”
Ah, the joy of it. I always love when my uninvited thoughts make their way in. And despite being irrational and nonsense, they can be very harsh and creating a sting where it hurts most.
Over time, and through the guidance of the late Marshall Rosenberg, founder of Nonviolent Communication, I've learned that this kind of talk is a window into a more vulnerable conversation with myself. It guides deeper self awareness, and leads to what I really want and the meaning behind it all.
Here is my ritual for moving through that judgmental inner voice.
Shari Elle, Founder of The Living Work introduces the building blocks that inspired this ritual in my latest podcast episode. Taking a moment to understand what lies beneath all those judgements.
